Representation - Note and Script Analysis

Notes
Representation - The ways the media RE-PRESENTS individuals.
Stereotype - Used as the audience will instantly understand 'Visual Shortcuts'. It is repeated frequently that we seem to know them as either normal or true.
Archetype - This is the 'ultimate' stereotype. For example White stiletto wearing, big busted, brainless blonde bimbo.
Counter- Stereotype - A representation that challenges tradition, stereotypical associations.
Representation of women across media
Beauty
Size/Physique
Representation of men across media
Strength
Power
Sexual Attractiveness
Physique
Independent

Eastenders
Stereotypical Father figure (Phil - trying to help his sos, pays the bills, household leader)
Negitive representation
He is quite aggressive
Rough clothing, Dull in colour and his stance is sort of intense.
Its slightly accurate and not fair - showing men a the stronger sex to women
                                                                                   |
less men on the tv drama, more women needed

Life on Mars
Men are the dominant sex throughout - deals with crime
                             |
The police woman is in more frames then the other two police officers
She isnt given anything to say showing that we are the weaker sex of the two.
It fits the stereotype that was around in the 70's that men were the ones to do
most of the stuff in the relationship and woman stay at home doing house work.
The main characters show his authority
Sexually aggressive to women
The ladies are representated as flirtacious people

Tipping the Velvet

The Boat that Rocked - Based in past of a group of people on a boat having trouble with their radio station, and try to find ways in order to get it up and running again so that they can do well as have it carrying on.There are a range of characters throughout the script:
QUENTIN,          ANGUS,
COUNT,             TWATT,
DORMANDY,    SIMON,
GAVIN,               THICK KEVIN,
DAVE,                HAROLD,
BOB,                  NEWS JOHN
and FELICITY.
All the different character have varied roles throughout the script. However, the men are the dominant gender as shown though out. Most of the male characters in the script are represented as a quite Typical, Aggressive, Loud and more.
An example of the men showing an interest at any chance of getting 'laid' not matter what the circumstances.
One of the male characters is shown as seeking sexual attention because the way he talks to the only girl in the script who is a lesbian, and he still tries to ask her if she would sleep with him or if she is a Bisexual.
It also shows that the men like drinking and smoking and having a good time as one of the scenes if them talking about drinking and smoking.
As the whole group work on a radio station, it shows them as being the breadwinner and making the money in the relationship (if any of them have one). Which was one of the main roles that men took on in them times as woman were the weaker sex and had to do the house work.
Felicity in the script only has one or two lines, this could of been done to represent woman as not being able to talk and only the men as that is who dominates it.
There are probably more repesentations through the script, however these were the ones that i was able to notice.

The Bill Analysis

An hour long episode that consised of a storyline over two or three of them until it got concluded.
Aimed at adult viewers as it is to do with a theme of crime and bad things going on that children dont need to pick up on.
At the beinginning after the titles have run, they give you a voice off screen with and image to show what has happened so far in the storyline to get people to pick up and understand what is going on. This is all going on while the programe theme tune is playing in the background.(VERBAL, AURAL AND VISUAL)
The whole episode is pretty much verbal based as they need to make sure that the whole story is explained so that nothing is missed out and leaving people without knowing whats happened.
The dialogue is spoken in the breifing there is between all of the police officers that are dealing with the case at that time (VERBAL)
When a character comforts one of their work partners who seems to be upset by putting his arm on her shoulder (NON VERBAL)
On screen through one of the shots they show part of the story in the pervious episode at the beginning (WRITTEN)
Showing pictures of the people who are involved in the case without being introduced to the characters themselves properly (WRITTEN, VISUAL and NON VERBAL)
Set in a police conference roon (VISUAL)
In a house which the crime is or has taken place (VISUAL)
They are all wearing either policing uniform or suites that show their level of professionalism (VISUAL)
These three above help to set the scene making it more interesting for the watchers.

White Girl Analysis

British Tv drama which is set as a film for and hour and 30 minutes
Set in two diaprived areas of a council estate and run down area
Target audience = Older teenagers and adults viewed on BBC after 9o'clock
Strong language is used throughout due to the high level of swearing and inappropriate material used.
Little girl looking out of the van window and being stared at by someone from a muslium background. (NON VERBAL)
Showing the different surroundings as though the little girl (main character) is looking at what she is passing on her journey (NON VERBAL)
Showing us the characters with the range of shots that are used (VISUAL)
Mise en scene is made more prominant by the clothing that they are wearing, ripped, dirty, rough showing the porr family living in povety (VISUAL)The dialogue had a lot of swearing throughtout the clip we viewed and at the same time it was kept to a minimal as it was mostly shown through more visual language. (VERBAL)
We get a sense of the time it is being set as the man at the beginning is having his dinner (VISUAL)

We pick up that it is in the evening time as of the conversation that occurrs between a housing business woman and the mum of the family with the line exchanged of being there at 6o'clock. (VERBAL)
There is music in the opening of it when she see she the girl cycling on a bike towards the camera in a wide shot, bike wheels moving, car noises and shouting. Range of shots are used to creat the story for the viewers (VISUAL AND AURAL)

Byker Grove Episode Eleven

Aimed a teenaged audience of both boys and girls
Lasts for half an hour
Used to be a very popular TV drama in the old days
There is a multiple narrative throughout the episode - shown by a few different characters producing their own films and a normal storyline. Peaceful, Action (films) + Father and Son Quality Time together.
In the start they use the dialogue to cut between shots which was also used in Five Days with really quick cuts between each one. With smooth transitions being shown at the same time, again to keep the audience entertained.
The dialogue is in a Newcastle accent of teenagers talking about their films and other people having conversations about certain things. (VERBAL)
It is set in a teenage youth club, shed and outside in the surrounding areas of the youth club. (VISUAL)
Close up shots, Medium Close Up Shots, Long Shots and Wide Shots get used within the episode which are used to hook the viewers to keep watching. (VISUAL)
The son of the father is seen standing in the  door way looking at a group of people in the middle of a conversation. (NON VERBAL)
The leaders of the youth club exchange a glance between each other over something that was said. (NON VERBAL)
One of the characters are filming trees as some part of relevance to her peaceful film. (NON VERBAL)
They get a shot of the poster which is in chinese style writting to show in younger viewers some part of the storyline without actually showing it through dialogue (WRITTEN)
Also conjoining with this shot they use oriental music to go along with the chiense type theme. (NON DIGETIC)

Five Day Analysis

Throughout analysing the TV drama Five days, we were put in to groups so that we could concerntrate on a specific area. The area in which my group were given was:
Verbal Language
Voice off screen of the captin on the aeroplane - formal

Conversation on the telephone of a woman - again very formal like she is talking to someone professional. However when she gets off the phone she becomes slightly less formal as she is talking to on of her work collegues.

There is another woman who is very business minded person who again is having a conversation on a phone but from what she is saying it could be seen as though it is a relative who on the other side.

The woman who is talking to her mother seems to be  the main character within the whole programe. Speaks in a very common/informal voice.

We notice that they all speak with a London Accent showing you where they are from. The dialogue is linked to cutting between different scenes to make it more interesting to the viewers. For example, When the woman in the house scene asks her mother for the time and it cuts to the first woman on the phone who then answers the question which was asked previously.

By doing this, it is introducing each of the characters individually and their personalities.

Analysis of two British Television Programs

Misfits
This is a TV program that is very rectent as it has only just finished its second series. It is very popular which is aimed at the audience of teenagers as the characters themselves are teenagers. It is also popular as each character has different personalities:
Simon- Invisibility (Geeky)
Nathan - Immortal (Comedian/ Popular)
Kelly - Hear peoples thoughts (Chav)
Curtis - Go back in time (Sporty)
Alisha - Turns men on (Girly)
It is set in a mostly in a communitiy centre as the group are doing community service due to doing some bad things, but along the way they end up saving peoples lives, meaning in other words they are heors.
Throughout the episode the group sell their powers as they think it wil help them to get on with a normal life, in return they get money that they can spend s they wish. There is a man who then goes and buys any of the powers he wants, after he has done this he calls himself Jesus. In the program one of the groups friends gets killed due to Jesus being greedy so the group go to get their powers back, while doing this they kill the Jesus person along the way and use the money he had to get either old or new powers of their choice. It goes on fr just under an hour as it needs to be able to get a whole story across. If it was to short people wouldnt understand what is going on and may stop watching it.
It is clear to us that the Protagonist of the program are the group (main characters) and the Antagonist is Jesus as he minipulates the powers that he gets to make everyone like him. We also notice that many dentotaions and conotations are used throughtut, an example of this is would be when they go to sell their powers in this confind office. Once they have finished getting rid of their powers a bright light apprears, This could just hve been done to show the changing of places but in furthur detail is could seem to be that they are going up to heaven.
Different lighting techniques are used to make the scene bright or darker, but it helps in order to set the atmosphere for the people who are viewing it. They also get used very ell to show the facial expressions at different stages of the program, as well as creating the effect of dramatic, sad etcc (showing emotions of the scene).
Music is also used as either dramatic, happy/ heoric. Again it is done to set the atmosphere but not only that, it helps show the viewers that they may look like ordianry people but with their powers they help to save the country. This is shown in the music by playing theme liked music which fits what is going on in the scene.
Sounds that are used are not a major part of the episode, they really just apprear to be there to make the rogram more interesting and to grabs the watchers attention, As of this you can argue that they are digetic or non-digetic. for example the mobile phone would ring but it is not important to what the people are focusing on. Therefore it is like a background noise to fill in gaps.

Eastenders
This TV program has been on our screens for a very long period of time while also changing, yet it still keeps people very entertained which is a reason why it is very popular to the public viewing. It is aimed at people of any age, as long as they are able to follow the storyline of what is going on throughtout the episodes of the week. Their are a number of cast for this type of program as it is meant to be shown as things that happen in everyday life, so they need to show that it is just an ordinary day of life on a freindly neighbourhood.
It is set in the East End (Walford) of a market square with a community pub and people living all around it. Each scene is in a different part of the square which keeps it interesting as it isnt always the same things happening.
Through the episode, One of the characters (Carol) decides to give in to her self and follow her heart by seeing her departed Son (Billy's) bestfriend Connor. This is because Connor is not very liked within the family as he was part of a shooting a while ago with one of Carol's brother. Therefore she is too uptight to lets things ruin the family relationship, so she keeps her toy boy quite and sneaks around while having some fun.
The other part to the stroy is that both of the pregnant character's, Kat and Ronnie finally get to meet their babys that they have been waiting for. They both have boys but give birth in too completely different ways. Kat gives birth to her baby boy Tommy in the barrrel store of their pub The Queen Vic, While Roonie gives birth ot her son James the normal way, in a hospital.
We are unclear of who is the Protagonist and the Antagonist in this episode as there is not a character who is being slightly evile. Some people may like to think that Carol is the Antagonist as she is deciving her family to go out with someone who is old enough to be her son. Yet people will have their own opinions on this.
The lighing for this program is done in two ways:
In a studio where they can use their own lights to fit the scene which is mostly to do with inside of a builing that could be day time or night time. If it is day time the crew use really big lights to go all round the set so that it gives the wastchers the sense of being during the day. If it is night time they turn off the lights and use small home lights which get placed within the set to make it a night time feeling. It also shows the characters emotions and to some extent their characteristics.
Music that is used is kept to a very miminal as it is only really used for background filling, mostly used within the cafe and the pub to give a sense of  communal, social place to be.
Sounds that are used are digetic as they have something to do with the scene, For example when the punters in the pub are speaking within a scene. This is done again to show the communal/ social place where people can go to have fun and relax while talking to people of the neighbourhood. There arent really any non-digetic sounds as they have made sure that all the sounds they use are appropriate and are only there if they are needed to be.
